Match Report

Cofis Defeated after Testing Champions.

Caernarfon Town 1 – 3 The New Saints.

Caernarfon Town welcomed The New Saints to the Oval last night and gave the Welsh Premier League Champions a real challenge before eventually losing by three goals to one.

Close to fifteen hundred spectators walked through the turnstiles for this much anticipated Welsh Cup tie and they witnessed an intriguing battle between two sides that were intent on playing on the offense whenever possible.

Town manager Sean Eardley had a depleted squad at his disposal due to the absence of five regular starters, but such is the strength of the squad that he was still able to put out a very strong side and the Cofis were also boosted by the return of talisman Darren Thomas, who was making his first appearance for two months.

The visitors were quick out of the blocks and many spectators were still waiting to get inside the ground when former Shamrock Rovers striker Dean Ebbe put them ahead, finishing from close range after good work by Jamie Mullan. This early setback was a blow to the Cofis’ gameplan but they refused to panic and slowly, but surely, they gained parity around the pitch before beginning to impose themselves and pushing the full-timers back into their own half for long periods.

Danny Brookwell was getting plenty of joy on Town’s left flank as he used his pace to attack the full back, and in the twenty ninth minute he beat his man on the way to the byline before providing an excellent cross that flew invitingly across the six yard area but just out of the reach of the advancing Jamie Breese and Gareth Evans.

With Clive Williams and Kevin Roberts breaking up play in midfield, Darren Thomas was finding little pockets of space to weave his magic, although the well-drilled TNS defence managed to find a way of snuffing out the danger on most occasions. Town fashioned their best opportunity of the half in the forty third minute when a Nathan Craig corner found Thomas at the far post and his downward header forced Paul Harrison into a smart save to keep his side ahead.

Thomas tried his luck again early in the second period when the ball fell invitingly to him on the edge of the penalty box but his first time effort flew over the woodwork. Just seconds later, a punt upfield from Aeron Edwards beat Gareth Edwards and Ebbe took full advantage as he raced forward and dinked the ball over Ramsay to double the visitors’ lead.

The Cofis responded well, and two minutes later Danny Brookwell got on the end of a Gareth Evans cross but could not keep his header down as the ball flew over the bar. Caernarfon continued to press on and they enjoyed a decent period of pressure around the hour mark, as first Jamie Breese and then Gareth Edwards threatened to pull a goal back. Brookwell and Thomas linked well to create space in the TNS area but could not quite manage to find the target whilst at the other end, Ramsay kept Town’s hopes alive as he dealt with two long range efforts from the visitors.

Darren Thomas finally gave the Cofi Army renewed hope when, in the seventy seventh minute, he finished from close range after excellent work by Danny Brookwell and Jamie Breese and three minutes later Rhys Roberts rose well to meet a Craig cross but his header was inches wide of Harrison’s upright.

Gareth Edwards was pushed upfield as Caernarfon threw everything at the visitors in the dying minutes but they dealt well with the pressure and an injury time goal from Aeron Edwards finally put paid to the Cofis’ efforts, and ended their eleven match unbeaten run.

It had been an excellent effort from the Cofis, who, for the second time this season, proved their credentials against the Welsh Champions. Sean Eardley’s side return to league action next week as they travel to Ruthin for the first of a nine-match run-in that will decide their promotion fate.
