Match Report

Town March On.

Caersws 0 – 2 Caernarfon Town.

The Cofis notched up yet another victory on the road today as they continued on their seemingly relentless march to the Cymru Alliance title.

Caernarfon have been unbeaten on their travels throughout the league season and never looked like succumbing to a reverse at Caersws after a blistering start that saw them race into an early two goal lead.

The hosts were handed a blow before kick off when first choice goalkeeper Dave Jones was injured in the warm up, giving a rare start to Luke Evans. The stopper was forced into action within sixty seconds of the start when he raced off his line to block a low effort from Jamie Breese.

Town were awarded a free kick in the fifth minute and Nathan Craig’s classy delivery into the six yard penalty area was met by Rhys Roberts, who got to the ball before Evans and Paul Grant and although his effort bounced off the woodwork, the big centre half was quick to respond and headed the ball into an empty net.

It was the perfect start for the title chasers and Evans had to pull off a fine save three minutes later to thwart Craig from adding a second, when he managed to get his hand to the Cofi captain’s fine free kick. The reprieve did not last long however as, from the resulting corner, Darren Thomas raced to the front post to meet Craig delivery before flicking it over Evans and into his net. It was an excellent finish from Town’s talismanic playmaker that put his side firmly in control of proceedings and the hosts were dealt a further blow as the goal also proved to be the last to feature Evans, who was forced to leave the field due to a hand injury.

Outfield player Ryan Davies pulled on the keeper’s jersey and was given time to settle into an accustomed role as the hosts did their best to stifle Town’s attacking options, getting in a number of impressive last ditch tackles to keep the ball away from their own goal.

Jamie Crowther and Nathan Craig were dominating proceedings in midfield and a well-weighted pass from the latter set Thomas free on the right on the half hour mark but his excellent low delivery across the goal was just inches away from the onrushing Breese and Danny Brookwell.

Davies did well to sprint off his line and push a Gareth Evans effort wide in the thirty eighth minute before he again showed good positioning to hold on to a Nathan Craig piledriver from the edge of the box. The youngster continued to keep his side within touching distance before the break when he saved from Joe Williams and Brookwell.

The second half action followed the pattern of the first as Caernarfon dominated possession and peppered the Caersws goal with efforts from outside and inside the penalty area, whilst the hosts continued to dig deep and showed plenty of grit and desire in their attempts to get back into the match.

Breese and Shaun Cavanagh both went close before the former hit the upright after cutting in from the left flank before trying his luck from twelve yards. Clive Williams and Rhys Roberts both headed over the target from corners whilst Cavanagh was again unlucky not to find the net when his goalbound shot was blocked by a defender.

It was one way traffic at this stage but through a combination of hard work and an excellent performance from stand-in keeper Davies, the Bluebirds managed to see out the remainder of the match without conceding a third goal.

The victory means that Caernarfon cannot finish lower than in second place at the end of their campaign and therefore their promotion to the Welsh Premier League is finally secured. However, Sean Eardley’s men will be desperate to go up as champions and they will hope to secure the title on Wednesday evening when they travel to Llandudno Junction for a 6:30pm kick off.
